Chapter 9

Festin woke up with a groan. He tried to roll on his side, to nurse the pain in his back, but chains secured him in place, making movement impossible. Panic gripped him and he began to thrash about. The bindings jingled noisily, echoing off a high ceiling. Darkness surrounded him, along with a dank stench of rot.

“Hello!” Festin shouted. “Please! Where am I? You can’t leave me in the dark like this! You can’t! I have rights, you Confederate bastards! Get in here and speak to me! Now! Please! Right now!” He screamed until his throat went hoarse, then sagged where he was, panting with exhaustion.

The pain in his back felt like he’d slipped a disk—or far worse. He tried to move his toes. They wiggled but felt numb. Same with his legs, though he could only tense the muscles. Motion itself was impossible. That led him to strain with his arms, trying to pull them up, but whoever had locked him up made sure his bindings didn’t have any give.

“Who are you people? This is cruelty! Let me go! Right now! Do you hear me? I demand it!”

A door opened behind him, light casting down upon him. Festin winced, his eyes aching from the sudden brightness. “Please! I’m injured!”

“That’s alright,” someone else spoke, one who had a thick accent but seemed to at least know English. “I’ll speak to him now, Centurion. Take your position in the hallway. I’ll be out in a few moments.” Footsteps approached the slab. A silhouette appeared above Festin, one that had a human shape. “What is your name?”

 “Festin. Albert Festin.”

“I am Supreme Commander Teras Pla of the Ervas Empire. You are a prisoner aboard my vessel. A human. Correct? There are no other species represented in your culture, if I am not mistaken.”

“Species?” Festin frowned. “What are you talking about? What do you mean? What’s the Ervas Empire? Who are you people?”

“A culture that opposes yours,” Teras replied. “But I do not believe you are in the position to be asking questions. I am the one in control here. You will obey me or you’ll suffer. I understand that, much like us, pain is an unwelcome experience. I can give it to you. And ensure you do not die. That is also a state we do not wish, correct?”

“Wait, what do you want to know? Why are you talking like this? I didn’t do anything to you people! I don’t even know who you are!”

“I have told you.” Teras sounded confused. “Were you unable to understand? I made my identity quite clear. I need to know more about the starship we did battle with. What do you know? Who are they?”

“I have no idea!” Festin shouted. “I was there to steal from the facility that got blown up! Why did you attack it?”

 “Your people exploit the Kintha.
